How Gov. Suntai Ignored Professional Pilot’s Advice And Embarked On Ill-Fated Flight

Fresh facts emerged on Tuesday about how governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba state ignored professional advice to fly the Cessna 208 which eventually led to a crash at the Yola airport.

According to reports, the governor’s hired pilot had earlier warned him against flying to the airport when it was clear they could not meet with the visual flight mandatory for that type of aircraft which is not in the instrument flight category.
The governor who obtained a private pilot licence from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, reportedly jettisioned the advice and instead took control of the cockpit with the said pilot refusing to join the ill-fated flight because of the obvious risk.
Yola airport is not in the category of airports where flights can be operated for 24 hours because it is not well-equipped which makes it a no go area after 6.00 p.m.
Only , Kano, Abuja and Port Harcourt are on 24-hour flight operations.
According to the country’s aviation policy, small jets like the Cessna plane Governor Suntai piloted on the day in question was only allowed to fly based on visuals from morning to 6.00 p.m. daily.

Amy Vickers, executive director of the milk bank, says in a press release that ’s donations have fed “hundreds, and more likely, thousands of premature babies across the United States.” says she went for the Guinness record because she wanted to raise awareness for the cause and encourage other women to donate to milk banks.

Hurricane Sandy: Ocean Surge May Hit Lagos In Seven Days

Lagosians need to be vigilant and be careful when they go to beaches as the State Government, yesterday alerted residents of a possible ripple effect of the hurricane currently ravaging some parts of the United States of America, such as on the state’s coastal areas within the next seven days.
has hit the United States hard with over 7 million residents without power, 15,000 flights cancelled in 3 days, and 48 lives lost, while several have been rendered homeless.
The alert was given by the state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Prince Segun Oniru; Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba as well as Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Taofeek Folami, at a joint media briefing in Alausa, Ikeja.
It would be recalled that an which claimed 15 lives occurred on August 17 at Kuramo Beach, Victoria Island.
However, a professor of climatology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor RNC Anyadike, countered that Nigeria could not suffer any ripple effect from the hurricane.
Asked if could suffer ripple effects from , Anyadike said: “It is not possible. We don’t have hurricanes in West Africa.
“Meanwhile, has already hit land, it will soon dissipate. What kind of ripple effect are they talking about? Do you know how far we are from New York?
“The only thing we are likely to experience is heavy rainfall occasioned by climate change not hurricane.”
Oniru attributed the likely ripple effect of the Hurricane to the location of , lying parallel to the South America region.
“We want to let Lagosians know what is going on, and what to expect, it is not to create panic, they should be careful around the ocean and lagoon. In the last five to six days, around the Caribbean, from Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and Hurricane Sandy has hit the east coast of America.
“Normally, when such happens, and the magnitude of it hits that part of the world, we always have a ripple effect in Lagos and around the West Coast,” Oniru said.
Ibirogba also urged residents to be vigilant, while he assured that the state government’s emergency response squad was on alert to manage any likely surge caused by the Hurricane.
Taofeek Folami, Special Adviser to the Lagos Governor on Environment, however, warned residents to refrain from dumping refuse in drainages and canals so as not to block passage of water.

Legalise ‘Igbo’, it is healthy – Seun Kuti

Son of foremost afro-beat crooner, , who died 15 years ago, , has condemned the non-legalizing of like , suggesting that the position of the law on the two products was illogical.
According to Seun, the favored has lethal consequences, while the legally opposed was medicinal and good for human consumption. But, Seun said, the lethal was favored simply because it was to the white man’s profit, stressing that would make black countries richer than the white if legalized.
His argument is absolutely against smoking while he recommends the legalization of marijuana. Proclaiming this position, Seun damned black politicians for taking the white’s advice against its own natural produce of ‘weed’ – which he said was good after all – and accepting the white’s product which truncates lives.
In an interview which he granted, says, “Marijuana is medical, and I feel Cigarette is selling legally because it is white man’s business. It is killing millions of people every day. ‘’ is not killing anybody… Marijuana is not only for smoking. It’s used for a lot of things; you can make clothes, you can drink tea, it is good, it is medicinal, it helps your appetite, they give it to cancer patients.. a lot of benefits”, he explained.

Hurricane Sandy Hits United States Of America

A truck drives through water pushed over a road by Hurricane Sandy in Southampton, New York (Reuters)

At least 50 million people are bracing for the worst storm forecasters say could be the largest ever to hit the United States.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the East Coast at 8:50 this evening, and will bring that part of the country to a standstill in the next few days with battering winds, flooding and lengthy power outages.

State of emergency has been declared in NYC, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston, Baltimore, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and there's mandatory evacuation in all all low level cities. Public transportation, subways, bridges, schools, tunnels, businesses, have all been closed.

Much of the East Coat is on lock down right now as they are expecting a storm surge of 6 to 11 feet above normal high tide. The hurricane is expected to merge with winter storm and they say it has the potential to cause "unprecedented damage."

Thousands of flights into and out of the US east-coast have been canceled and president Obama has also canceled his presidential campaign to monitor the storm, which could cost the US billions of dollars in damages.

Steve Jobs's Secret Yacht Looks Like a Giant iPhone

 steve-jobs-yacht-600
Just over a year after Steve Jobs's death, shipbuilders in Aalsmeer, Holland have finally finished the yacht that the Apple visionary spent years designing -- stealthily, of course. Boy, does it look like an Apple product. Her name is Venus.

Built entirely out of aluminum, the yacht was designed by Jobs personally along with some help from French designer Phillipe Stack. It's a big one, too. The ship measures between 70 and 80 meters, but because of the aluminum construction, it's lighter than your typical yacht, giving it a bit of an edge when it comes to speed. It doesn't lack amenities, either. The front of the ship is equipped with a uniquely large sun deck with a jacuzzi built in. Behind that comes an all glass cabin that's topped with a bridge equipped with seven 27-inch iMacs that handle the ship's navigation and controls. When you take a step back, squint a little and turn your head to the left, it sort of looks like an iPhone 4 with the strip of windows around the middle and the clean lines.

Jobs's yacht project might seem a little out of character at first. After all, the billionaire was famously humble about many aspects of his lifestyle. He lived in a normal house on a normal suburban street in Palo Alto, California, not some massive mansion out in the mountains. He wore jeans, a black turtleneck sweater and New Balance tennis shoes, a basically thrifty choice for a man who could afford his own cashmere farm. He also drove a very nice car, but it wasn't rapper nice. That is, it wasn't a Bentley or an Aston Martin or a Maybach -- just a Mercedes. (Ok, now we're stretching the humble thing, but you get the point.)

We now know that Steve Jobs was not a stranger to the finer aspects of being filthy rich, luxuries like chrome-coated yachts and custom-built private jets. But hey, the guy wanted to retire one day, and so what if he wanted to live like a king after building the world's most valuable technology company. Walter Isaacson wrote about the yacht in his biography of Steve Jobs, who had evidently been working on the project alone for six years:
After our omelets at the café, we went back to his house and he showed me all of the models and architectural drawings. As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist. The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high. He had gotten the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support. By then the boat was under construction by the Dutch custom yacht builders Feadship, but Jobs was still fiddling with the design. "I know that it’s possible I will die and leave Laurene with a half-built boat," he said. "But I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die."
Sadly, Jobs did die before the yacht was finished, but the folks at Feadship finished the job. Evidently, the Jobs family recently had a little christening party with the shipbuilders, who all got an iPod Shuffle with "Venus" engraved on the back as a token of thanks. Now that we said all that stuff about Jobs and conspicuous consumption, you'd think they could have at least splurged for the iPod Touch.

I Lost My Job Because I Refused To Sleep With My Boss: Ex-Police Officer

Osatohanmwen Okoh was once a vibrant, beautiful police officer cum business woman. Life was rosy and sweet for her as she had her husband and children, a home to call her own and her job. All these necessities of life disappeared overnight and she was left with nothing except two out of three children to take care of despite her zero financial level. It wasn’t a fire disaster but more devastating stages of frustration and calamities.
Peoples Daily Weekend encountered Osato as she is fondly called, at the 10th year anniversary of Kapital FM, where an anonymous philanthropist had used the platform to donate another N2million to widows gathered within Abuja.
This intervention wouldn’t have reached Osato who roams the street of Abuja with her children without a roof over their heads, and takes solace in parks and Christian convention venues to lay her head at night. She was however able to know about the good gesture, thanks to her old worn transistor radio which is her only link to social life.
On hearing about the donation that was going to be made to widows, she rushed to the venue. Not knowing that this writer is a journalist, she approached her and asked where the list of beneficiaries was. It was immediately suspected that her case was different from the rest of the widows, who definitely had the grace to wear their best outfit and had been despite all odds able to feed their selves and the children they left at home.
However, Osato was not disconcerted; she was breathing heavily which gave the hint that she was not medically fit.
Though she was shown how she could get enlisted but she was already late for the full package, she had to make do with half. She told Peoples Daily Weekend that in her condition, a quarter or any amount will be appreciated by her as she was not even expecting any good to come her way again.
This statement prompted our reporter to further urge her to tell her story which she relayed in fluent English, but with tears streaming down her cheeks.
 Her story
I was living at Jikwoyi phase 4, Dagbana near Catholic Church in Jikwoyi. All of a sudden, I lost my husband. Then there was the demolition exercise in the area. I was not at home when they did it, my neighbours phoned me and when I came they said a woman claimed she owned the place. In fact the case is in court between people that own the place and the woman.
When I came, I saw that most of my properties were vandalized by Babbanboola(waste disposers) though my neighbours helped me packed some. Since then I have had no place to sleep; I started moving around with my baby which I had after my husband’s death. My husband had died before the demolition incidence. I was moving around with my three children in tow but the baby died; she could not survive the malaria and cold she was exposed to. I was taking her from one hospital to another but she didn’t make it. I took the other two to the village after her death.
By that time, I had spent all the money I had on her illness. I was selling foodstuff (gari, palm oil etc). I used to go to the village to buy those things to sell. I was selling both wholesale and retail.
The death of the baby, loss of job and capital, loss of roof over my head and the absence of my husband who was supposed to stand by me, all these led to high blood pressure for me. My B.P. rose even to almost 300. I even had partial stroke but I was able to survive it. Since then I’ve not had a place to sleep; I just hang around at places; wherever there is night vigil, I go there to stay; I stay at motor parks and places like that.
I cannot really stay in the village because I was not like this before, I was better off, I was a police officer before I was dismissed from duty on the basis that I was absent from work.
My boss personally defaulted me, tried me which is actually against the ethics of the job even if I was guilty, I pleaded with him but he wouldn’t listen. The reason I was absent from duty was due to an accident I had, and I went and showed him my injury, he said I should go and treat myself only for him to accuse me of being absent from duty afterwards.
He picked on me because he had previous problem with me; he insisted that I should be tried. I requested for a neutral body to try me as the ethics demand.
Despite having all the proof of not being guilty, he went ahead and recommended me for dismissal. I wrote an appeal through him because he was my direct boss.  He withheld the appeal, instead of giving it to the C.P. It was after everything had happened that people started telling me I should have sent an advance copy to the C.P. I didn’t know because I have never been involved in such crisis before.
It was after this that I knew the whole procedure so I wrote an appeal to force headquarters three times; unknown to me that, he had a squad mate there that was hijacking the appeal. There was a time one of my former bosses came to police headquarters, he saw me roaming around and asked me what the matter was. I told him everything and he took me before the O.C provost who sent for the officer.
The squad mate sent a message that he was not on duty which was a lie because I saw him few days before that day. He was even making jest of me calling me a civilian. I went to his squad mate and asked why he said the man was not on duty. He said, why would he want his friend dismissed? That didn’t I know they are squad mates? He said I should go and do my worst; he would not present his friend for trial.
I continued to go but eventually, my file was declared missing and it became a matter of ‘who do you know? Since I didn’t know anybody there, there was nothing I could do. He even suggested I slept with him or give him money but I declined both options and that was the end of my career as a police officer which was when I was about getting promoted to a corporal.
I sold my land in the village which I used to start the raw food business which later collapsed due to the demolition and the illness of my baby and her eventual death.
To make ends meet. I pick empty water containers, empty malt cans which I break and sell at N40 per kilo. Some will collect 28/30 of 75cl water bottle container from me for N100.
This is how I have been surviving and managing to look after my children.
If they give me this money, supposing it will be enough to rent a house, I will love to sleep in a house again and if it will be enough for me to do the business I was doing before, I will like to continue with the business since I don’t know how much, whatever it is enough for me to do, I will do it.
My B.P is always rising, the doctor at the last hospital I went to in Nyanyan where I was even admitted always tell me to take my medicines but I can’t afford to buy it. He said I should be staying at places where I will not be thinking because of the partial stroke I had so I try to look for how to make myself happy but it’s not that.
Life has been so difficult for me. I will like to start business again, sleep in a room again because am tired of being on the street, carrying all these rubbers on the head. Said Osato.

Amazing Health Benefits Of Watermelon

We don’t always have to take drugs, if only we knew the importance of the we have around us and we use them accordingly. They are natural healers, and unlike most drugs, they taste good.
Some are fun to eat, and is definitely one of them.
That triangular wedge of bright red/white/green, sweet juiciness forbids us to take life too seriously and shouts, “SUMMER!!!” As if that weren’t enough, is packed full of nutrition, hydrates and is low-fat. While many of us think of as a great snack option, when you tally up its nutritive value, you might consider making this all-star a feature player in your cuisine.
Watermelons are an excellent source of several vitamins: vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevent cell damage, and promote healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.
Tomatoes have been highly touted as a great source for lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps fight heart disease and several types of — prostate in particular. , however, has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable.
If your little ones don’t dig into their swiss chard, lima beans or spinach — all great sources of potassium — consider offering them a serving of watermelon instead. It is a great source of potassium, which helps muscle and nerve function, helps maintain the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base balance, and helps lower the risk of .
Watermelon also contains the amino acids citrulline and arginine, which can help maintain arteries, blood flow and overall cardiovascular function.
Alone or in a fruit salad are the most common ways many of us eat watermelon. While eating the meat of the fruit is the best way to take advantage of all of its nutrients, this is one of my favorite bits of summer refreshment. I get a version of this from my local burrito truck. The key to making this great: don’t over-sweeten it. With just a touch of sweetness, it’s heavenly.[Care2

Pre- Match Briefing, Chelsea VS Man U - What I think!

TACTICAL BRIEFChelsea are looking to extend the four-point lead over our title rivals from Manchester...What we think...

Key battles'We had such a positive result at Spurs last week that Shakhtar was a bit of a knock-back. It showed again that because we are European champions everyone is looking to us as their biggest game of the season, so we are a target, particularly in Europe.
'Everyone wants to knock us off our pedestal - none more so than Man United this weekend. We have to play well, but even when not everything is clicking we have enough to win matches.
'That goes for individuals too. Look at Juan Mata, who has been something else this season. Because he is in great form and everyone is talking about him, opposing sides will prepare special measures for him. But we have several players you could put into that in-form category. We're playing well and top of the league.
'The problem for Man Utd in dealing with them is that their central midfield area is not the strongest it's been and they were without Darren Fletcher for a long time which was a blow for them. It is an area, with our creativity and pace, we can exploit.
'Their centre-backs are being exposed a little more than we've seen in recent years and maybe again that is a question mark over the central midfield. It's not happening that regularly but the defence is missing some players and not as solid as Sir Alex would like.
'So I don't know how much individual attention they can afford to give to Mata, or anybody else in our attacking three.
'Fernando Torres is often centre stage against United. It's difficult to criticise him when he has played well recently, with great work-rate. He's also made a great link-up between the three behind. Although he didn't look the full shilling in midweek, with Torres you have to keep playing him, even just for the psychological impact.
Torres

'Daniel Sturridge has looked lively and dynamic when he has come on in the last two matches, and Robbie Di Matteo may be looking at him in a central role.
'Playing against United, though, you'd play Torres so as not to give them a lift in the dressing room when they see the teamsheet. They would know and fear Torres's capabilities on the big occasion.
'Obviously Man Utd's main threats are Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie - and, like last year here, we have no John Terry again. I have no concerns about Gary Cahill and David Luíz as long as they stay completely focused.
'With Rooney there's some debate about the best position for him now, and he's been used in midfield recently. To be honest, you could play him at right back and he would still look good.
'You can't really plan for Rooney but you can RVP. He's quite one-footed so you look at closing his left side down. You also have to keep your body open because he's nippy and has very good movement. Isolate him as much as possible, steal his service so he's not involved. If you concentrate and succeed in that he will drift wide where he is less effective.
'I have to say I am massively looking forward to this match. And especially to a famous victory for the Blues.'

Desperados: Boko Haram now Sending Threat Text Messages for Donation

A new dimension has once again popped up in the saga in the country. Operatives of the military Joint Task Force () in State have raised the alarm over messages being sent by to select individuals, especially contractors, politicians and government officials.
The messages, claimed, are used by the sect to demand large sums of money to be used for certain purposes like building of mosques.
The task force, in a statement signed by Lieutenant-Colonel Sagir Musa, copies of which were made available to journalists, on Friday, in Maiduguri, urged members of the public to be on the alert as regards the development.
It warned that whoever succumbed to the ploy and channelled money or resources to the sect would be arrested and treated as its accomplice and financier.

“I listened to my songs, I did well. I’m shooting the videos soon” – Tonto Dikeh

To every hardened critic and those that think she will be a flash in the pan, has a message for you all: There is no stopping her. In an exclusive interview with Stella Dimok-Korkus, Tonto speaks extensively about her music career and how she plans to build on from her first two singles:

What prompted you into singing?
I love music and I wanted to do my own thing, to contribute my own music.
You got monstrous negative response to both singles. How did feel with all the attacks?
I listened to my songs over and over again and I told myself I did well. In all I see only the positivity in it,I made History. Peoples opinion of how my music was has further strengthened my belief that dreams die when you let the next man’s opinion get to you and I am using now to pass a message to everyone out there, if you can just do it. Don’t let anyone’s opinion kill whatever dream you have or try to stop you from taking the next step. Click to continue
You tweeted that you were not giving up. Does that mean you will become actively involved in music?
I love my acting career and I don’t see myself jumping into full time music. I am however shooting the musical video of my songs,I will not let the hating stop me.
You released your song on Wednesday October 17, 2012 and two days later despite the negativity your song had hit 5.2 million download on the internet. How do you feel?
The most unanticipated and hated song became the most talked about, most controversial, most downloaded and of course the most listened song.I feel great Stella, no regrets.!
We look forward to the musical videos.till then I am sure comedians will soon add
Your song jokes to their shows.
Hopefully. Thank you and here’s a loud shout out and thank you to everyone who stood up for me.

Yvonne Nelson Denies She Is Bleaching, View Her Before And After Photos

The popluar Ghanian actress released a press statement recently claiming she is not bleaching. Read the statement. look at the photo below and tell us what you think.

My attention has been drawn to recent media reports that I am bleaching my skin and the continuous nature of this wicked, unfounded and absolutely unnecessary misinformation have compelled me to once again respond.
These stories are absolutely not true and do not in any way put food on anybody’s table, does not add value to any body’s life and can only be described as mischief.
I fully understand the dangers of skin bleaching and would not engage in any such venture. I am a lady and I appreciate my God-given looks. I do not need to change my skin colour for any reason.
Truth is that even if I was bleaching, I do not owe anyone any explanation, but I am not bleaching, I have not bleached and I won’t bleach.
I love my skin just the way it is and I do my best to keep it healthy and nice.
If God has remained good to me and continues to make my skin nicer, I do not see how it should be a problem to someone.
In a society that largely frowns on skin bleaching, it would be unfair and very unkind to falsely accuse me of bleaching when I am absolutely innocent of that charge.
As an actress I take different pictures under different shades of light and with different shades of makeup depending on what the picture would be used for.
It is therefore not strange to find different pictures of me looking different. It does not mean I am bleaching and one does not need to be an industry player to know this.
Even in movies, depending on who the director is, there are different lighting angles and brightness levels that can be used to make a character look different and this is no secret. Even a change of weather can have an effect of one’s skin.
I want to use this platform to assure all persons who have expressed worry about these reports that there is no cause for alarm because I am not bleaching, have not bleached and would not bleach.
There are more prudent and beneficial things to focus on and these frequent distractions are of no use.
I should have spent this time focusing on my new movies or memorizing my next script and not responding to false gossips.
Thank you.
Sincerely yours,

MUST READ: The Silent Killer Living Inside All Of Us

in Stomach lining
It’s silent, insidious and is the cause of symptoms that range from the antisocial to the downright dangerous. But sadly, so few people know of its existence. It’s the mysterious bacteria behind your most embarrassing symptoms.
Alisha, a 30-year-old sales manager, hated going out in public. She refused offers of evenings out with her friends, bypassed busy events and dreaded business meetings with a passion.
It wasn’t that she disliked socialising – she had always been quite gregarious at heart – but chronic symptoms were making her life a misery and she preferred to hide herself away.
Although her symptoms were troublesome, ranging from bloating and mild stomach pain to flatulence and belching, they didn’t seem serious enough to seek medical advice. She did some research online and decided it could be aerophagia, which is caused by swallowing too much air, and tried to treat it by avoiding carbonated drinks and putting an end to her chewing gum and smoking habits. Yet nothing seemed to help.
Several months passed and Alisha was no longer just embarrassed by her symptoms, but was feeling uncomfortable throughout the entire day, while horrible abdominal cramps had started to keep her awake at night.
She arranged an appointment with Dr Denesh Gopalan, a gastroenterologist at Welcare Hospital in Dubai. He decided to test her for the little-known bacteria, Helicobacter pylori. The diagnosis was positive.
is one of the most widespread infections in the world and around 60 per cent of the UAE population has it,” says Dr Gopalan. “Yet most people don’t know about this silent infection until they start suffering from gastritis or the painful effects of ulcers.”
Its presence is hard to detect, but delayed discovery can give rise to a number of problems as is associated not only with ulcers, but also with stomach and malt lymphoma, which is a stomach affecting the white blood cells of the immune system.
Thankfully, once the cause of Alisha’s problems had been pinpointed, her infection was easy to eradicate. “She was put on a course of antibiotics for 14 days, after which the symptoms she had been suffering from for so long subsided remarkably,” says Dr Gopalan.
Helicobacter pylori previously named Campylobacter pyloridis, is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium found in the stomach of humans and animals. Although our stomachs are lined with a protective coating to keep it safe from bacterial infections, H. Pylori secretes an enzyme that neutralises stomach acid, enabling the bacteria to burrow deep into the walls of our stomachs, where it may survive undetected for decades.
The damage it causes to the mucous coating allows powerful stomach acid to get through to the sensitive lining beneath. Together, the stomach acid and H Pylori irritate the lining of the stomach or duodenum, which can cause ulcers and other complications.
The link between H Pylori and ulcers was a scientific breakthrough. Scientist Barry Marshall discovered it by deliberately ingesting broth infected with the bacteria in order to prove the connection, and in 2005 he and his colleague Robin Warren were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery, which reversed decades of doctrine that ulcers were caused by spicy food and stress.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta estimates that two-thirds of the world’s population is infected with the bacterium, making it the most widespread infection in the world.
It is most likely acquired by the ingestion of contaminated food or water, which can happen via faecal matter if food is prepared by people who do not wash their hands after using the bathroom, or in poor sanitary conditions. It can spread from person to person via saliva or by sharing food utensils and is most common in socio-economic groups characterised by crowded living conditions.
Symptoms and implications
H Pylori is often asymptomatic, meaning most people with the infection will never have any signs or symptoms. When symptoms do occur they may include burping, bloating, heartburn, oesophageal reflux, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence and upper- and mid-abdominal pain. Difficulty losing weight may also be attributed to H Pylori, Dr Gopalan says. Having the infection causes stress and eventually cortisol.
H Pylori is also the leading cause of gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining. It is responsible for over 90 per cent of all duodenal ulcers and nearly 80 per cent of all gastric ulcers.
“This pernicious bacteria, which survives so easily in our stomachs, should be exterminated before it does serious harm,” says Dr Gopalan. “While it can remain in the human stomach for a long time without causing any symptoms, it may manifest into more serious diseases over time – one to two per cent of infected people are at risk of stomach and the gastric malt lymphoma is eight times more common in people with H Pylori than in those not infected.”
Apart from these diseases, medical researchers and doctors believe that H Pylori may be implicated in a number of non-digestive conditions including cardiovascular disorders, migraine and Raynaud’s disease (impaired circulation in the hands and feet). Surprisingly, it may also cause depression and anxiety. The happy chemical, serotonin, is largely seen in a healthy digestive system and damage to your stomach by H Pylori will lead to a shortage of this important chemical.
Detection, treatment and prevention
“When I tell my patients about this bacteria, seven out of ten of them will never have heard of it before,” says Dr Gopalan. “But I am more surprised to see that even physicians often do not think to test for this bacteria when a patient complains about the common symptoms of this infection.”
A patient’s breath can be a typical warning sign, says Dr Gopalan, as reflux directly from the stomach or higher levels of periodontal gum disease caused by the bacteria can give it a strong smell. Testing for H Pylori infection may be performed on blood, stool or breath samples or through biopsies of tissue from the lining of the gastrointestinal tract obtained during endoscopy.
H Pylori is successfully eradicated in 80 per cent of cases, but it can be a tough infection to treat, says Dr Gopalan, as it often resides in the deepest layers of the stomach. It is also important that the antibiotics are prescribed carefully.
H Pylori quickly becomes resistant to several antibiotics when given one at a time,” says Dr Gopalan. For this reason, a ‘triple therapy’ is often employed, which consists of two types of antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which is used to decrease the stomach’s acidity, allowing the inflamed stomach lining to heal. The treatment is given for ten to 14 days according to the presence and severity of the infection. After a month, the test is repeated to see if the infection has cleared.
“Some antibiotics that are recommended elsewhere in the world might not be suitable in UAE due to the bacteria’s resistance pattern here,” warns Dr Gopalan. “It is advisable to check with your doctor about whether the antibiotic prescribed is the correct one for your particular geographical area.”
Since the source of H Pylori is not yet fully known, recommendations for avoiding infection have not been made. In general, it is always wise to wash hands thoroughly, only eat food that has been hygienically prepared, and drink water from a safe, clean source.
Certain nutrients, especially vitamins A, C, and E, along with zinc, protect the stomach lining by combating free radicals, so ensure that you are not deficient in any of these. Certain probiotics (healthy bacteria) such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium may also help protect you from H Pylori.[GN]
